Secrets from a Medicare Specialist

I am going to provide you with some insight from someone that has been doing this for 5 years now.

I know that you are probably getting calls, emails, and letters from everyone trying to be your best friend. They are only trying to make a sell. They do not care about you only your money. Most of them are from call centers that only push a one call close. The heck with your needs, need a moment to think and decipher all of the information, forget that close NOW! If someone is pushing you into a plan and not taking the time to explain everything, you need to walk away. This is about you and what is in your best interest. You are the one paying for the policy and when you get sick, you will be the one using it. If you are feeling pressured or pressed, DO NOT SIGN UP! Take your time and make sure you are comfortable.

Now for the secrets....

There is no agent that will be able to get you a better rate than anyone else. It does not matter if someone does 100 policies with Company ABC and someone else does 1 policy with Company ABC then the rate will be the same for the same plan, with the same coverage. The rates will be the same if you call Company ABC directly. The rates are filed with your State Insurance Commission and they cannot give a discount to one agent over another.

So knowing this, the question you are probably asking is who do I go with and why?

You should go with an agent that knows Medicare top to bottom, takes the time to explain all of your options and all parts of Medicare, regardless of how many times it takes to make sure you understand, and will provide you the best customer service. Who are you going to call if you have a question? Who do you think should call and for what? I would think if you have a problem, issue, or a question, you should call the person that enrolled you into your plan. They were there to help you when it came time to enroll, but where are they now? They should be near a phone or a computer ready to answer your question within a reasonable amount of time. You should be able to call them and get your questions answered, concerns addressed, and problems solved by the agent. If not, then they are not a good fit for you.

Most agents will not give you any help with the Part D plans, because they are not getting paid by doing so. The amount an agent makes enrolling someone new to Medicare is $72.00. They do not feel it is worth their time; basically you are not worth their time. Part D is part of Medicare, for most people on average the most used part of Medicare, and it should be worth your time. If your agent will not help you enroll into a Part D plan then they are doing you a disservice.
